et's say you want to add some interactivity to your site, but you're not a programmer. Say a quiz or a survey, for example.

here are many fine custom scripts available which can be had for a price. But what kind of script should you get? Something programmed in Perl or php?

ell, assuming you're not overly Web tech-no savvy, Id say Perl will give you the best bang for your buck.

he thing is, that while php is a very fine and powerful programming language, it usually takes many files across multiple sub-directories to do something like a survey. This can all be a bit overwhelming for the uninitiated unless the developer has included an installer.

ou can usually accomplish the same task in Perl with just one or two files. A bit less overwhelming.

n either case, you'll have to edit a line or two of code and likely set permissions after uploading the files to your server. Don't let this scare you, but you'll need to know your Web hosts path to perl or the path of certain files in a php script. http://MySite.com/survey.php is not a path. That's a URL.

f this is too confusing for you, hire a Web designer /developer for God's sake! That's why we're in business. To understand these things. We do this stuff all the time — it's second nature to us.

Is Nothing Better than Something?

You already know you should be testing your sales copy to increase its conversion ratio. You know you can use Glyphius to score your copy against a massive database of profitable ads and that you can put your testing on autopilot with MuVar. But are you testing nothing?

It turns out that nothing actually does increase conversion ratios more than you might think. You might be wondering what the heck I'm talking about so let me explain. Nothing doesn't mean a blank page with an order link. What I mean is using nothing as one of your testing variables except for the order link of course. You need an order link to get the all important order.

After you've spent some time writing two good headlines or calls to action or whatever variable it is you're testing go ahead and test nothing as the third version of the variable. It may sound strange but that means a sales letter without a headline, guarantee, or call to action. It goes against common sense but you'll never know until you test it. And in the end you'll probably be surprised to learn that in some cases nothing will convert better than your best headline.

Will nothing really increase the profitability of your sales letter? It may and it may not. You'll have to test it yourself but I can say that I've been surprised at how often nothing outperforms my well crafted sales copy. It happens frequently enough that anymore I wouldn't even consider not testing nothing.

You can do it for the headline. Sometimes no headline at all converts better than my best headline. You can do it for the product description, paper style, guarantee, product picture... basically every single section of your sales letter except the order link. Include nothing as one of the variable versions and see where you might be talking your customer out of buying your product.
